MVPs Chiles, Farber team up for weekend Sockers sweep in Tacoma
Farber's five goals power win on Saturday, Chiles scores four on Sunday

TUKWILA, WA--When you’re facing the challenge of back-to-back games on the road, it never hurts to have a couple MVPs on your side.

Brian Farber and Kraig Chiles each scored six goals over the weekend as the Sockers swept a pair of games from the Tacoma Stars at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Washington. San Diego won Saturday’s 13-6 contest, which doubled as a US Open Cup Western semi-final, behind Farber’s five goal-one assist performance. Chiles picked up the baton on Sunday, scoring four goals with an assist as San Diego outpaced Tacoma 10-6.

The Sockers (9-0 PASL) maintained a number of record streaks with their successful results at Starfire. San Diego has won 23 straight matches dating back to last season and 17 straight in PASL regular season contests. The Sockers also have won a league-record 11 straight road games, including their playoff and US Open Cup games.

"This was our best week of training, best week on the power play and it showed (this weekend),” said Farber, “The rust is off, we’re starting to buzz and flow together. This is the tightest team I’ve been a part of in a long time so when we’re all on the field and all feeling it, we’re unstoppable I guess.”

Saturday night’s game featured relentless defensive pressure from the Sockers, who pressed the action all the way across the field for all sixty minutes. Farber benefited from a number of back-post passes, tapping in three of his five goals. On the season, Brian Farber has 18 goals and 7 assists, a 25-point total that is tied for fourth in the PASL. Chiky Luna added a hat trick with two assists for a five-point performance, his best in two seasons.

On Sunday, the Stars and Sockers both played with heavy legs as a snowstorm raged outside, packing in the chilled crowd as the temperature dropped inside Starfire. After San Diego jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on goals by Eric Wunderle and Diego Rovira (short handed), the Stars answered back with a pair in the second quarter to tie the game 2-2 heading into the half. The Sockers turned to Chiles in the second half, and the reigning MVP potted four goals, including a shootout tally, to lead San Diego to an eight-goal half.

With six goals and two assists on the weekend Chiles increased his league leads in goals (29) and points (43).

Sockers captain Aaron Susi had an excellent weekend, helping coordinate a power play that converted 6-of-7 chances in the two wins. Susi had a goal and three assists as well, increasing his career point total to 496.  Anthony Medina had two goals and two assists on the weekend and defender Ze Roberto capped 120 minutes of relentless defensive effort with a pair of Sunday goals.

Riley Swift earned both wins in goal (8-0) and stopped a shootout by Tacoma’s Ian Weinberg in the second quarter, his third shootout stop in as many tries this season. Chris Toth appeared in relief of Swift in both games in the fourth quarter.

The Sockers return home on Saturday, January 21st to take on the Turlock Express (7-3) for the first time this season in a matchup of the top two teams in the West. It is Sockers T-Shirt night presented by Sonic, America’s Drive In. The first 500 fans in attendace at the Del Mar Arena will receive a new Sockers T-Shirt. The game will be a "double", counting both as a PASL regular season contest and as the US Open Cup for Arena Soccer Western Final.  Game time is set for 7:05, with internet video/audio coverage on 619Sports.Net.
