Brian Farber added a hat trick with two assists for San Diego, who improved to 32-0 all-time at the Del Mar Arena.

"This is a team full of All-Stars, anyone on this team can score goals," said Farber, who increased his season totals to 25 goals and 40 points, second in the league, "It was my night tonight and Aaron's night. It was really fun."

Playing without league MVP Kraig Chiles, who rested to protect an MCL strain in his right knee, the Sockers barely missed a beat on offense, scoring three power play goals in four attempts. Goalkeeper Chris Toth (5-0) tied a season low in the PASL with just one goal allowed, and added his third offensive assist of the year. A crowd of 2,137 showed up to celebrate San Diego's 22nd consecutive win inside league play.

"The city's definitely getting behind us a little bit," said Farber, "I think the streak helps."

Eduardo Velez had two goals and an assist and USD alum Eric Wunderle added his 16th goal of the season for the Sockers, who return to action in two weeks when they travel to Turlock on February 24th, before hosting Tacoma in the regular season finale on the 25th.

Sockers Sweep January Slate with Wins over Anaheim and Tijuana

The month of January looked to be a challenge for the San Diego Sockers but instead turned into an opportunity to excel.

Sweeping all eight games in the month of January, including four sets of back-to-backs, the Sockers (13-0) firmly established their position as the top team in the Professional Arena Soccer League, clinching their division for the third straight year. A 10-5 win in Anaheim on Friday, January 27th was followed by the Sockers' most dominant performance of the season to date, a 13-2 takedown of Revolucion Tijuana.

The Sockers have won 27 games in a row overall and 21 straight in the PASL regular season. A 31-0 record at the Del Mar Arena is complemented by a 13-game road winning streak, also a league record.

"This team is really starting to click," said forward Kraig Chiles, who earned his fourth PASL Player of the Week honor with seven goals and three assists in the two game sweep, "We're gelling together and playing really good soccer right now."

Chiles passed the 100-career goal mark in the PASL over the weekend while breaking the young league's single-season record for goals. With 42 goals in 13 games, Chiles has already eclipsed Bernie Lilavois' total of 40 in 15 games during the 2008-2009 season in Stockton. With 61 total points (19 assists), Chiles is seven points away from owning the league's single-season points title as well.

The Sockers' recent dominance also coincides with a return to form by all-PASL midfielder/defender Diego Rovira. A stress fracture in his left foot caused Diego to miss the first four games of the season, but while his foot is still less than 100%, Rovira has been feeling healthier and the results are clear. Diego has scored the game's opening goal in each of the Sockers' last three games and has sparked a penalty-killing unit which scored two short-handed goals last weekend and set up another.

"We came out sharp and ran right at (Tijuana)," said Rovira after Saturday's game, "We came out strong and showed who the top team is in this league."

With regular starting goalkeeper Riley Swift gone for two weeks on an advanced firefighting training course in Sacramento, 24-year-old backup Chris Toth stepped into the spotlight, earning three straight wins in goal. Toth had a dominant weekend against Anaheim and Tijuana, allowing just 7 goals in two games while making 27 saves. Toth also picked up an assist on one of Kraig Chiles' four goals on Saturday.

“Those guys are making plays in front of me all the time and it makes it easy on me to get the saves I need to,” said Toth.

Team captain Aaron Susi sat out Friday's game but sparked the offense on Saturday with a goal and three assists, setting up two power play goals. Brian Farber had another outstanding weekend with two goals and five assists, and forward Anthony Medina tallied the goal of the year, a third quarter bicycle kick goal against Tijuana which delighted the Del Mar Arena crowd of 2,428.

The Sockers travel to Monterrey, Mexico to begin February, participating in the first-ever FIFRA Championships. The four-team international exhibition tournament, featuring the Sockers, Monterrey Flash, and teams from Canada and Ecuador, will take place between Febuary 2nd and 5th in Monterrey. The Sockers return stateside for their next home game on February 11th against the Arizona Storm. Tickets are available for this game, which will be another Sonic T-Shirt Night, with the first 500 fans in attendance receiving a new Sockers T-shirt.
Sockers Sweep Turlock and Phoenix as Win Streak Reaches 25

Three-quarters of the way through their toughest month of the 2011-2012 season the San Diego Sockers have managed to keep their perfect record intact, moving within a step of another U.S. Open Cup championship and a PASL Western Division crown.

The Sockers edged the Turlock Express 10-8 on Saturday at the Del Mar Arena before traveling to Phoenix on Sunday for a 9-3 victory over the Arizona Storm. San Diego (11-0), playing its third set of back-to-back games in January, rode the momentum of team captain Aaron Susi's 500th career point scored to defeat Turlock in a game which counted both as a PASL regular season contest and as the semi-final of the U.S. Open Cup for Arena Soccer. The Sockers will face either Detroit or Cincinnati on the road in the Open Cup Championship during Presidents Day Weekend.

Sunday, Ze Roberto and Diego Rovira each had two goals and an assist in the Sockers' 9-3 win over the newly renamed Arizona Storm. Forward Kraig Chiles continued to pace the San Diego offense throughout the weekend, scoring four goals on Saturday and contributing two goals and two assists on Sunday.

As the weekend approached, the Sockers knew their team captain stood at 497 career points, three shy of 500. The gameplan was for Susi to reach the milestone at home, and San Diego featured Susi on set pieces and in a penalty kick shootout during the game. After scoring his sixth goal of the season in the first quarter, Aaron missed on a third quarter shootout but later set up a pair of goals, first with a header to Chiky Luna in the crease then with a flick out of the left corner, finding Eric Wunderle with 1:27 remaining in the third quarter.

After three frames the Sockers led 10-4 and were in firm control of their bid for a third straight US Open Cup championship berth. Turlock (7-5) narrowed the gap in a 4-0 fourth quarter, with star midfielder Jorge Quiroz contributing two goals and two assists for the game. Riley Swift improved to 9-0 in goal for San Diego, as the Sockers won their 24th consecutive match and improved to 30-0 all-time at the Del Mar Arena.

Sunday's game saw a different lineup take the pitch for San Diego, as head coach Phil Salvagio rested veterans Susi, Nate Hetherington and Chiky Luna, while midfielder Eduardo Velez served a one-game suspension for a red card acquired earlier in the season. Chris Toth got the start in goal as well as the Sockers took on a re-named and re-shaped Arizona Storm side which had shifted management mid-season.

The Sockers methodically distanced themselves from Arizona (1-9), outscoring the Storm 2-0 in each of the first three quarters. San Diego suffered a scare when Chiles suffered a mild left quad strain in the second quarter, but the league MVP barely missed a shift and still put four points on the board with two goals and two assists. Brian Farber rebounded from a scoreless night, scoring his 19th goal of the year while adding a pair of assists.

The revelation of the day, however, was defender Ze Roberto, the first-team all-PASL star who is known for his outstanding defense and very rare offensive contributions. Taking advantage of the opportunity afforded by the absence of offensive-minded defenders Dan Antoniuk and John Krause, Roberto is picking his spots to come up into the Sockers attack. The result has been four goals and three assists (seven points) in the last three games.

Toth (2-0) carried a shutout into the fourth quarter before conceding three goals in the final fifteen minutes. The Sockers won their 12th straight road game in the PASL, a league record, and their 25th consecutive match overall.

San Diego returns to action after a short week of rest and training, heading to Anaheim on Friday night for the fourth and final matchup between the Sockers and the Anaheim Bolts (3-6). Game time is set for 8:05pm and the game will be carried live both on ESPN Radio 1700 and 619Sports.Net. Saturday night at the Del Mar Arena is Ball Night as the Sockers host the resurgent Revolucion Tijuana (6-4), now in second place in the West.
