Sockers Welcome Back Matt Clare to San Diego

(May 2, 2017)

On the first day of MASL free agency, the Sockers emphatically answered one of the biggest questions about the roster. Fan favorite, Midfielder Matthew Clare, was re-signed to a new five year deal, showcasing the club’s ambition to win a 15th arena championship.

“We are definitely excited to bring Matt back for many years to come. He knows how to score, and proved he can dish the ball this season, two qualities that you need for a championship caliber team” – Chiky Luna, Director of Player Personnel

Matt Clare led the Sockers in assists during the 2016-2017 Major Arena Soccer League season. Clare was also the only player on the roster to record 20+ goals and 20+ assists this season. His exploits on-the-field earned him ALL-MASL Honorable Mention Team for the second consecutive time.

When asked about why he chose to come back to San Diego, Matt Clare shared his affinity for the team and the city:

“San Diego has begun to feel like my home over the last couple years. I’ve become very close with a lot of the guys on the team and I believe we have a good group to push for a championship. I really like the direction of the Sockers, especially with the revamping over the course of last season. It’s a proud franchise with a lot of tradition and as a player you always want to play for the best teams. It’s a bonus that the Sockers happen to be located in the best city.”

Despite receiving interest from many other teams around the nation, both indoor and outdoor, Clare decided San Diego would be the best place to continue his indoor career.

“I’m coming back for an MVP season!” - Matt Clare
