Sockers Launch Student Reading Program
The San Diego Sockers are excited to announce a new Community Partnership with the 501(c)3 non-profit organization Traveling Stories and the launching of the Sockers Student Reading Program for the 2019-20 season.
Sockers Community Relations Director Jonathan Greene stated, “The Sockers believe reading is the foundation to success and we want to help youth in San Diego County cultivate a life-long love of reading. Partnering with Traveling Stories, a local leader in promoting childhood literacy, is a great way to start and enhance the program.”
Traveling Stories empowers kids to “outsmart poverty through literacy” with weekly programs called StoryTents. At these StoryTents, kids between the ages of 2-12 receive free literacy support and are encouraged to read for fun. Kids not only invest their time in reading but learn how to invest their rewarded “Book Bucks” as well when participating in this progressive reading experience. "Book Bucks", or pretend money, are earned for every book read at a StoryTent, then kids can turn in "Book Bucks" to redeem prizes.
Hezchi Naseem, Traveling Stories Director of Programs, expresses that, “Our Book Buck and prize incentives not only motivate the kids to read more, but they also place a value on reading and teach money management skills at the same time. We are very excited to be working with San Diego Sockers and help motivate even more kids to not only read but read for fun."
Students between the ages of 5-16 can be registered by their parent, guardian or teacher to join the program. Teachers can also register their entire class if they plan on reading together.
The program, which concludes on March 1, 2020, will offer a grand prize of a smartwatch, a new bike and four Sockers loge tickets to one winner who qualifies after completing a minimum of 500 minutes at a Sockers home game in March. In addition, the Sockers will honor all students who have completed reading a minimum of 500 minutes at a home game in March to celebrate their reading accomplishments.
