USA vs Mexico In Continental Cup
The calendar has turned from summer to fall, and the sights and sounds of the world’s fastest soccer game are about to move from memory to reality once again, as the Continental Cup unofficially kicks off the beginning of the indoor soccer preseason on Saturday night at Frontwave Arena. Team USA takes on Team Mexico for a 7:00pm kickoff, with tickets available at frontwavearena.com.
All-Star rosters will take the floor on Saturday night to play for country over club, with stars from the San Diego Sockers and the Major Arena Soccer League going head-to-head in a 60-minute “friendly” match. Players from the Sockers, Empire Strykers, Tacoma Stars, Milwaukee Wave and Lehigh Valley Phantoms will take part in the event, as well as some of Tijuana’s top indoor soccer talent. The San Diego Sockers coaching staff will split up to manage the soccer strategy, as head coach Phil Salvagio will lead Team USA against assistant coach Rene Ortiz’ Team Mexico.
“We know the indoor fans have been waiting through the longest offseason in professional sports, but the new season is almost here,” said Salvagio, “Saturday night kicks it off. The talent will be great, and the action will be intense.”
Team USA features nine members of the MASL Ron Newman Cup champion San Diego Sockers, including goalkeepers Chris Toth and Boris Pardo, forwards Luiz Morales and Abdul Mansaray, midfielders Andrew Estrella, Sebastian Mendez and Adrian Reyes, and defenders Jesus Pacheco and Drew Ruggles. The Milwaukee Wave, MASL runners-up to the Sockers in 2025-26, are also prominently featured, with MASL Defender of the Year Mario Alvarez and MVP finalist Alex Sanchez both scheduled to play. Empire Strykers star midfielder Justin Stinson and former Sockers forward Nick Perera (who has returned to Tacoma Stars as player/GM) round out the star-studded roster.
Team Mexico is led by Sockers captain and All-Star defender Cesar Cerda, and includes fellow Sockers star midfielder Charlie Gonzalez, Sockers defender Luis “Peewee” Ortega, and Empire Strykers keeper Brandon Gomez. The real treat for Sockers fans, however, will be the opportunity to cheer on Tijuana soccer greats such as Brandon Escoto--the reigning TST 7v7 Million Dollar Goal-scorer--along with other former Sockers Christian Gutierrez, Irvin Mojica, Luis Perez, and Ismael Rojo, for rare appearances north of the border. TJ talents Edgar Alvarez, Javier Gallegos, Ramon Ramirez, Jaime Romero, and Rodolfo Valenzuela fill out a Team Mexico side that would be a league favorite if it could roster in the MASL.
The Major Arena Soccer League 2026-27 season will kick off on Thanksgiving weekend, as the San Diego Sockers aim to repeat as league champions and capture the 18th title in franchise history.
