Preview: Turlock vs Sockers

(November 15, 2016) San Diego Sockers (3-1) continue their road game schedule on Friday against a surging Turlock Express (1-3) team. Since the Sockers’ Opening Weekend 12-1 win, Turlock has found the back of the net a lot more often. Friday marks a rematch that Turlock fans are anxious to witness, while Sockers’ fans look to continue the #Questfor15 in winning fashion.

Last weekend, San Diego Sockers ended with a 1-1 record on the road after thrilling matches against expansion team Florida Tropics and a rematch against Dallas Sidekicks, respectively. Sockers agonizingly lost 6-5 to the Tropics in the final minutes of play, but rebounded to secure a Shoot-out victory over Dallas Sidekicks.

Turlock Express had a rough weekend of travel south of the Border. First, they travelled to face last season’s Ron Newman Cup Runner Cup, Soles de Sonora. In a 33 goal highlight reel of a game, Sonora prevailed 18-15. Next, Express traveled to Tijuana to face Atletico Baja where they ultimately lost 13-6.

San Diego Sockers boast some incredible early season stats. Goalkeeper Chris Toth holds the highest save percentage (.823%) in the MASL. Meanwhile, the Sockers currently have the best goal differential in the league at +14. Sockers Captain, Kraig Chiles is third in Points (10) and Goals (7) in the MASL, while Forward Matt Clare is tied for first in assists (6). New signings Brandon Escoto and Max Touloute have given the Sockers added dynamism in attack.

Turlock Express has the second most dangerous scorer in Forward Anibal Echeverria, who has 11 points and 8 goals through four games. Turlock will look to Echeverria to score early and often if the Express are going to have a chance at unsettling the Southwest Division’s best defense.

3 Things to Watch:

  • Forward Kraig Chiles – will indoor soccer’s most dominant scorer get back on the scoresheet? Can he match his 5 point game against Turlock from Oct. 29th?
  • Who will start in Goal for the Sockers? – Chris Toth is the #1 goalkeeper in the MASL, but Pardo had a solid outing against Dallas and could be pushing for more playing time.
  • Can Sockers stop FW Anibal Echeverria’s offensive output?
