San Diego's Offense Disappears In M2 Cup Final Loss

The MASL 2 Western Conference Champion San Diego Sockers 2 could not manage to score a goal in their biggest game of the year as the Chicago Mustangs blanked San Diego 7-0 to win the inaugural M2 Cup Championship FInal at the SoccerHaus in Colorado Springs, CO.

San Diego did not have a potent offense during the regular season only averaging over five goals a match, but on Sunday it was non-existent for most of the match. Forward Andy Lorei, who was the focal point of the team's offense all season long, was stymied along with the rest of the team in the attacking zone. The Sockers 2, who scored 22 goals in the two previous playoff games, managed only 12 shots against the MASL 2 Goalkeeper of the Year Jesus Flores and never really had many quality scoring chances. Flores, who was not tested, made five saves for the win.

After a scoreless first period, Chicago's Alonso Sandoval scored the eventual game-winning goal at 7:05 of the second quarter. Chicago led 1-0 at halftime. Niver Arango notched consecutive goals in the third quarter to extend their advantage to 3-0. Four different Mustangs scored in the final period to provide the 7-0 margin of victory.

The Sockers 2 will be disappointed in the outcome of the today's game, but they concluded their first MASL 2 season as Western Conference Champions with a 7-5 regular season mark and winning two of three playoff matches. The team will return to action in December 2018.
