Sockers fall 9-3 in Hermosillo vs Soles de Sonora

(February 25, 2017) A rivalry has begun to form between the Sockers and Soles de Sonora. Over the past two seasons, every game between the two teams has been a tight, chippy affair. This game was no different, until Sonora pulled away to a 9-3 victory in Hermosillo late in 4th quarter.

A possible MASL semi final match up between the two conference champions in mid-March, should both teams win their respective division playoff series.

The Soles de Sonora jumped out to an early lead through leading goal scorer Frank Tayou, capitalizing on a fortunate power play. As the Sockers started to get a grasp on the game, the Soles scored two quick goals to finish the 1st quarter. The home team would lead 3-0 after the first quarter of play.

The Sockers came out firing in the 2nd Quarter and were rewarded when Kraig Chiles scored his first on the night. Some Route 1 soccer from the back opened up the Sonora defense and Chiles was able to capitalize from the Matt Clare assist.

Sonora responded with a couple of fortuitous goals to take a 5-1 lead. Frank Tayou completed his hat-trick in the 2nd quarter. Chiles responded with his second goal on the night to keep the 3-goal difference going into the half.

The second half was a much less free-flowing in front of goal. The third period saw only goal scored. The Sockers controlled most of the play and possession, but couldn’t find a way past Sonora’s goalkeeper Reynoso. Chiles eventually completed his hat trick with a toe poke goal, but not much else went the Sockers way.

With the Sockers chasing the game in the 4th quarter, they decided to throw men forward. Sonora used San Diego’s desperation as an opportunity to strike. Sonora scored 3 goals in the final quarter, two of which were floated over the head of 6th attacker goalkeeper Victor Quiroz. Frank Tayou, MASL’s leading goal scorer ended the night with 4 well taken goals.

The Sockers return to San Diego to face Atletico Baja in their final home game of the season at the Valley View Casino Center at 5:05pm. Get your tickets at sdsockers.com/tickets
