Sockers Select Maxwell Rodriguez In MASL Draft

The San Diego Sockers on Sunday took part in the second annual MASL Pro-Player Combine Draft, held at the conclusion of the three-day Combine in Utica, New York. Working with the eleventh and final pick of the first round, the Sockers selected Maxwell Rodriguez, a defender out of the Los Angeles area.

Rodriguez was chosen in his second straight Combine Draft, having been selected 11th overall by the Kansas City Comets in 2022. Rodriguez most recently has played for La Familia of the Southwest Premier League (outdoor), and trained with the Empire Jets last season of M2, although he did not take the field.

“We’re excited to see what Max could bring to the field at training camp,” said Sockers captain Kraig Chiles, who was on hand in Utica to make the draft selection, “He came very close to making Kansas City’s team last year, and has a great attitude.”

The Sockers traded their other two selections in the MASL Pro-Player Combine Draft for future considerations.

The Sockers will begin training camp in mid-November in advance of a December 3 season opener at home against the Tacoma Stars, a 5:05pm kickoff at Pechanga Arena. The 2023-24 MASL campaign will be the Sockers’ final one at Pechanga Arena before moving into the brand-new Frontwave Arena in Oceanside in 2024.
