Sockers Select Three Locals In MASL College Draft

The San Diego Sockers today participated in the second annual MASL College Draft, making three selections from local colleges. These players will be followed with an opportunity to sign and train with the parent club.

With their first-round selection, the Sockers selected Mason Tunbridge, a midfielder out of the University of San Diego (USD). The London, UK native was an All-American at USD, leading the Toreros with seven goals and nine assists in his senior season while earning West Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

In the second round, the Sockers selected midfielder Aaron Alvarez from Cal State University San Marcos (CSUSM). A redshirt senior, Alvarez earned all-CCAA honors in 2022, and helped lead to the CCAA semifinals. He netted four goals in 50 appearances at CSUSM.

In the third and final round, the Sockers selected Juan Salazar, a forward from Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU). The Colombia native played four seasons at CSU San Marcos before transferring to PLNU, where he was First Team All-PacWest, and Second Team All-Region, leading the club with eight goals and eight assists in 17 starts.

Drafted player rights will be protected for the player to go to contract with the team until December 1, 2024. It is recommended that a player who still plans to play in college not sign a contract until after their eligibility has been used.

The Sockers continue their 2023-24 MASL regular season after the holidays with a Saturday, December 30 matchup against the Tacoma Stars at Pechanga Arena. Tickets are available for Team Poster Night by calling (866) 799-GOAL or visiting
