Sockers Sign Defender Ismael Rojo

The San Diego Sockers today announced the signing of defender Ismael Rojo to a Major Arena Soccer League contract for the 2019-20 season and beyond. The five-year contract will secure his services in San Diego through the 2023-24 MASL campaign. As per team policy, terms of the agreement will not be announced.

“Ismael Rojo has earned this opportunity,” said Sockers director of player personnel Chiky Luna, “He is a true example of what someone can accomplish in our program, coming from open tryouts, dominating in MASL2, and now earning his chance on the big club. We believe ‘Big Rojo’ has a bright future in our sport.”

The older brother of teammate Manuel Rojo, Ismael tried out for the Sockers at their annual open showcase in 2017-18 and was signed to the MASL2 roster for the 2018-19 season. Appearing in 11 games for Sockers-2, Rojo scored twelve goals from the backline, adding six assists for an 18-point season (1.63 points per game). The Sockers-2 went 12-0 and won twice in the playoffs for a perfect season and a MASL2 championship, with Rojo named a 2nd Team All-MASL Defender.

When he takes the floor for San Diego, Ismael Rojo will become the fifth Tijuana native on the club’s active roster, joining Brandon Escoto, Christian Gutierrez, Eduardo Velez, and Manuel Rojo.

“We love to find, cultivate and develop local talent, no matter which side of the border it comes from,” said general manager Sean Bowers, “What matters to us is if you are one of the very best, and we believe Ismael Rojo will be an impact player for our club.”

Bowers continued, "We may find another gem at our next open tryout this Saturday and Sunday, 8:00am-12:00pm, at the Sockers Indoor Center. Players can register online at SDSockers.com/tryout."

The Sockers will renew their quest for a MASL championship in the 2019-20 season, with the team’s season opener set for November 24 at Pechanga Arena San Diego. The league schedule is expected out soon. For information on the Sockers, season ticket memberships and more, please visit Sockers.com.
