Sockers Sign First-Round Pick Maxwell Rodriguez

The San Diego Sockers today announced the signing of Maxwell Rodriguez to an MASL player contract for the 2023-24 season. As per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Rodriguez, 27, was the eleventh and final pick of the first round at the 2023 MASL Combine, held in Utica, New York. A defender out of the Los Angeles area, Rodriguez was chosen in his second straight Combine Draft, having been selected 11th overall by the Kansas City Comets in 2022. Rodriguez most recently has played for La Familia of the Southwest Premier League (outdoor), and trained with the Empire Jets last season of M2, although he did not take the field.

“Maxwell earned our curiosity in Utica, and now he’s earned our attention,” said Sockers general manager Sean Bowers, “He’s come out to training with a great attitude and put in a lot of hard work. We see him as a valuable part of our depth heading into the 2023-24 season.”

In addition, the Sockers announced the signings of goalkeeper Julian Garcia, and midfielder Quentin Ivy, both to one-year contracts. All players will be available for selection starting with the season and home opener on Sunday, December 3, as the Sockers host the Tacoma Stars for a 5:05pm kickoff at Pechanga Arena. Tickets are available by calling (866) 799-GOAL, visiting sdsockers.com, or going to the Pechanga Arena box office on match day.
