Sockers Reading Program Partners With SDCOL

The San Diego Sockers - presented by Kaiser Permanente - are proud to introduce their latest community partnership with the San Diego Council on Literacy (SDCOL) in support of the team’s Student Reading Program for the 2023-24 season.

The Sockers believe that reading is the foundation for success and are dedicated to making an impact on the education of its supporters, with an emphasis on the youth. The Sockers’ Student Reading Program is set to kick off on September 1, 2023, and will focus on volume reading with the hope of helping students with reading proficiency and comprehension.

“The Sockers are delighted to have an organization like the SDCOL to partner with and represent our reading program,” stated Sockers’ Community Relations Director Jon Greene. “By collaborating with an organization that shares educational and community values, we will be able to amplify our efforts to promote reading appreciation and continue empowering the youth of San Diego.”

The SDCOL, dedicated to promoting literacy for all, exercises its mission through advocacy, resources, and partnerships, such as this new alliance. They prioritize resources to support services, research, and advocacy to define and improve the current state of literacy, and strategic collaborations to fill service gaps. These goals will go hand in hand with the Sockers’ objective to teach kids to obtain a sense of appreciation for reading throughout their educational years.

The San Diego Council on Literacy is committed to fostering thriving communities that are characterized by diversity, equity, and inclusion. By acknowledging these critical components of their mission statement, the council hopes for their followers to recognize their dedication to the staff, partners, and communities they serve.

“The San Diego Council on Literacy is happy to engage in a literacy partnership with the greatest indoor soccer team of all time, the San Diego Sockers," said SDCOL CEO Jose Cruz. "The Sockers Reading Program is the kind of community investment we need to bring more local children to reading proficiency. Add “Literacy Champions” to the Sockers team's history of being winners. Let’s read San Diego!"

Through March 1, 2024, junior participants (ages 5-7) and senior participants (ages 8-16) can download reading logs from the Sockers’ website, aiming to complete a minimum of 250 minutes for juniors and 500 minutes for seniors. In return for their achievements, participants can look forward to receiving a variety of Sockers’ prizes, and a chance of complimentary tickets based on their amount of activity. Registration for the program will conclude on February 1, 2024.

The organization’s reading program is just one of multiple school programs that have been implemented to provide educational, healthy lifestyle, and character development programming for the youth of San Diego. To learn more about the Sockers’ impactful initiatives, visit sdsockers.com/school.
