Sockers stumble on the Road against Express

(Turlock, CA - November 18, 2016) For the first time ever, Turlock Express (2-3) was able to defeat the 14 time Indoor Champions San Diego Sockers (3-2). A massive reversal of fortune after Sockers handily defeated Turlock 12-1 back on the October 29th league opener. Turlock Express jumps to 3rd in the Division after the 6-4 victory over the Sockers.

San Diego Sockers took the lead in the opening minutes of the game through former MVP Jeff Hughes’ goal, his first of the season. Turlock equalized shortly thereafter and never looked back. The Express scored two more unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead after the first quarter.

Sockers Captain, Kraig Chiles scored a beautiful goal to add to his impressive career tally and make it 3-2. However, Express’ Martyn Arista restored the two-goal cushion to take the 4-2 lead into halftime.

Sockers responded after the break to score two well earned goals through Raymundo Reza and Max Touloute, respectively. Touloute’s goal was also short handed as last week’s MASL Team of the Week midfielder Brandon Escoto was serving a blue card in the penalty box.

Turlock duly responded in the 4th quarter with two goals, one each from Ivan Campos and Adrian Gutierrez. With 4:23 left in the game, Express veteran Ivan Campos pounced on a fortuitous loose ball inches from the Sockers goal and graciously put the game away.

A tough defensive matchup, in a small arena, Turlock found a way to frustrate the Sockers prolific attack. Sockers outshot Express 31 to 22 with Express Goalkeeper Christopher Welch having a night to remember, making 15 key saves. His performance earned him “Player of the Game” honors.

San Diego Sockers continue their road game schedule next week against El Paso Coyotes, the Sockers 4th consecutive away game. Next week, Turlock Express travel to Southern California to face Ontario Fury in another Pacific Division match.
